IEEE 802.3 10GBase-LRM

10GBase-LRM (Long Reach Multimode) is a 10GbE interface specified by the IEEE802.3aqworking group. According to the Ethernet nomenclature of10 Gigabit Ethernet, it is a LAN interface for multimode fibers with a wavelength of 1,310 nm (L) and 64B66B coding (R).

Standards of 10 Gigabit Ethernet

The 10GBase-LRM was developed especially for server farms, where mainly multimode fibers are used. These are to be made usable for 10 Gigabit Ethernet technology with the 10GBase-LRM interface. A key aspect of 10GBase-LRM is that the optical fibers used in this interface do not require a special OM class.

To improve range, 10GBase-LRM uses Electronic Dispersion Compensation( EDC) on the transmitter side, which is implemented in the transmitter. The range was 300 m in the initial phase and was later reduced to 220 m for practical reasons.
