Fedora

Fedora is a Linux distribution and successor to the early versions of Red Hat Linux. The Fedora project was started in 2002 by Warren Togami. Fedora Core 1 was based on Red Hat Linux 9 (RHL 9), after which RHL was no longer developed, but replaced by the Fedora-based Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).

The Fedora project has set itself the goal of releasing a new version every six months, but this has not always been achieved in the past. New system kernels are pushed in as soon as they are available, rather than keeping them constant for as long as possible like other Linux distributions.

Fedora is open to any developer, but only for software with fully free licenses. This means that Fedora software originates from the project itself and from independent developers.

Fedora can be downloaded as a live CD with Gnome desktop or installed as a minimal CD via FTP protocol, HTTP or NFS system.

In the development version Rawhide all current innovations are integrated and tested in daily "Rolling Releases". Before an official release is published, a Branched is derived, stabilized during the alpha and beta phases and released as a final release. At the same time as Branched, Rawhide is already being further developed for the next but one Fedora version.
