DAB surround

DigitalAudio Broadcast(DAB) can transmit digital radio in monophony and stereophony. In addition to these classic audio techniques, there is a variant for surround sound: DAB Surround.

The DAB. method for surround sound enables six- channel audio reproduction in 5.1. It is based on MPEG surround and is backward compatible with existing DAB receivers.

With DAB Surround, the surround sound is mixed down to the two stereo channels and additional information is added for surround sound. The additional information is limited to sound-defining characteristics such as the level differences, the coherence and the correlation of the individual channels. Because only a small amount of information is transmitted for later sound reproduction, the six-channel DAB-5.1 requires only an additional data rate of 5 kbit/s.
