volume descriptor
The volume descriptor is an information track that is written to each CD-ROM.
A volume descriptor contains information about the date of manufacture, the manufacturer, the title and some other information. The volume descriptor has a special meaning for special applications like CD-V, photo CD and CD-I. For these compact discs (CD) it defines which application has to be started to read the contained data.
The volume descriptor affects copyright protection, so it should be filled in correctly when creating a CD-ROM.
