utility program

A utility program is a system-related program that supports the operating system or application programs with additional functions.

A utility program, Dienstprogramm, ensures the basic functions of a data processing system so that it can maintain the states it needs, for example, for memory allocation reallocations, for updating program libraries, for test aids, and so on.

Utilities may support complementary and new functionalities and may be integrated in their operating functions with those of the operating system or application programs in such a way that they are not explicitly recognized as utilities. They can be loaded separately or run as background programs.
