unstructured supplementary service data (GSM) (USSD)

Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) is a GSM protocol that exchanges information and messages between mobile terminals and the mobile network in a similar way to the Short Message Service( SMS). USSD is specified in ETSI 300 625 as an unstructured supplementary service for the transmission of data with mobile terminals.

Comparable short message services are Short Message Peer to Peer( SMPP) and the Mobile Messaging Access Protocol( MMAP).
