As the name turbo code already associates, these are accelerated codes with error correction.

With turbo codes, the transmission rate is increased by not repeating an error-prone transmission. With the applied forward error correction( FEC), the receiver can check the data for transmission errors and correct them.

Turbo codes work with channel coding. They are mainly used on transmission lines susceptible to interference and where a maximum data transfer rate is to be achieved with a limited bandwidth. Turbo codes are used in radio technology, satellite communication, for example in DVB-SH, and space travel. The receivers can correct various errors via forward error correction.

Inconjunction withLDPC coding, turbo codes achieve approximately the theoretical limits for the transmitted data rate on a disturbed transmission channel specified by the Shannon theorem. Turbo codes have the advantage that the data rate can be increased without requiring higher transmission power.
