thin film diode (TFD)

A thin film diode is a diode used in flat panel displays as a display element. It has high pixel quality, a short response time and, unlike Thin Film Transistors( TFT), requires as little power as STN technology.

Thin film diodes are manufactured using thin film technology and are constructed as active matrices in displays. They are often bidirectional MIM diodes, which have fewer layers and are easier to manufacture and are characterized by extremely low currents at low voltages. The diodes are located in close proximity to the pixels and switch them on and off. The switching voltages are determined by the physical dimensions of the MIM diodes. Shorter response times are achieved with active matrices than with passive matrices.
