photonic service engine (PSE)

A Photonic Service Engine(PSE) is an extremely powerful optical-electronic component for 100 Gigabit Ethernet( 100GbE) that enables network operators to migrate from 100GbE to 400 Gigabit Ethernet( 400GbE).

The PSE engine consists of several hardware and software components. On the receive side, it consists of an AD converter with downstream signal processing, a software-basedforward error correction, SD-FEC, and the hard decision FEC, HD-FEC. At the output of these components is the received payload as an electrical signal. In the transmitting direction, the transmitted payload is fed via an HD-FEC and an SD-FEC to digital signal processing with a downstream DA converter, which uses it to generate an optical signal for wavelength division multiplexing.

Soft Decision Forward Error Correction (SD-FEC) uses algorithms that increase transmission performance. The same applies to integrated wave shaping, which provides improved optical signal-to- noise ratio( OSNR).

PSE units support data rates of 40Gbps, 100Gbps and 400Gbps. They can bridge distances of up to 3,000 km without repeaters and have data rates of over 23 Tbit/s.
