phantom mode

There are several methods for increasing the data rate ofxDSL technologies in subscriber lines: Vectoring, line bonding and phantom operation. All these methods, which are also used in combination, aim to use the copper twisted pairs for as long as possible in order to make the high investments in optical fibers in the access area as late as possible.

As far as phantom operation is concerned, this works with virtual channels that contribute to the data traffic and thus increase the data rate. The prerequisite for phantom mode is a connection cabling with two or more copper twisted pairs. A physical DSL transmission channel is implemented via each copper tw isted pair and a third DSL transmission channel is switched as a virtual channel between the two physical transmission channels. These three DSL transmission channels offer a 30% higher transmission speed with two copper twisted pairs. With four copper twisted pairs, four physical and three virtual DSL channels can be switched. This increases the data rate by 75%.

With this technology, data rates of over 800 Mbit/s were achieved over distances of several hundred meters with seven DSL channels.
