name binding protocol (NBP)

The NameBindingProtocol (NBP) is an AppleTalk protocol for translating device names into AppleTalk addresses on local networks.

In AppleTalk, there are no central entities that assign addresses; rather, they must assign addresses themselves using AppleTalk Address Resolution Protocol (AARP). The Name Binding Protocol (NBP) assigns dynamic addresses to the fixed AppleTalk names of devices and the services they offer. It is located between the transport layer and the application layer.
