interworking function (IWF)

The interworking function (IWF) is a functional unit that is used to convert functionalities between different protocols and networks. For example, an IWF unit assigned to the mobile switching center( MSC) in GSM networks can convert protocols for GSM-specific services to protocols in other networks.

InATM networks, the interworking function can also handle the conversion of signaling between an ISDN network and an ATM network. The functionality is performed in both directions and includes, among other things, address adaptation and the allocation of ATM virtual connections to the 64 kbit/s channels.

An interworking function can also refer to the interface between a mobile radio system and a telephone network. Usually, the function is performed by modems or Data Terminal Adapters( TA), which convert the data transmitted over radio and adapt the data formats.
