integrated receiver/decoder (CATV) (IRD)

An Integrated Receiver/Decoder(IRD) is a reception device for pay TV, comparable to a set-top box.

The integrated receiver/ decoder can receive encrypted TV signals from the LNB converter, decrypt them and decode them for playback on the TV screen. Data streams from data-reduced digital TV are converted into a video signal by the IRD box.

The differences to the set-top box are not clear, but the IRD.Box does not have a connection to the telephone network and is therefore not suitable for interactive distribution services.
