A fax modem sends and receives data encoded in fax format, which a fax machine or fax server decodes and creates the facsimile from.

Texts and graphic documents can be converted into the standardized fax format using special software.

Fax modems are available as fax cards for installation in computers or as external devices. Fax modems transmit their data using the T.30 fax protocol and operate at data transmission rates of 14.4 kbit/s or 33.6 kbit/s.
