During the transmission of data and the display of texts, images and graphics, errors occur on the transmission path, which become noticeable through error-ridden data streams or disturbing image displays.

Various transmission codes have mechanisms for error detection( EDC), others for error detection and correction( EDAC), and still others for error correction( ECC).

If data streams cannot be corrected despite the presence of error mechanisms because the error algorithms do not allow it, then error concealment mechanisms can be used for alignment. However, error concealment requires error detection and uses estimation or interpolation techniques. In the first case, bits containing errors are replaced by estimation. In the second method, which is mainly used in graphical representation, the erroneous byte is determined by interpolation from the neighboring bytes.
