electronic document management (EDM)

Electronic Document Management (EDM) is about the management of completely different documents of a company: orders, invoices, correspondence, personnel data, audio and video recordings and many more.

EDM systems can capture, edit, store and process a wide variety of documents - paper documents with text, photos, images and other media such as audio and video. EDM systems consist of several databases in which a wide variety of documents are stored. They include scanners, printers and servers that manage the various databases, and storage units made up of redundant disk arrays.

To optimize document storage, EDM systems work with metadata. Each document is uniquely identifiable through the metadata, shortening the document search in the databases. The metadata can be organized by topic or chronologically and can be found by keywords or by associative strategies.
