dome loudspeaker

Most electrodynamically operating plunger-coil loudspeakers have a cone-shaped diaphragm with which they deliver the sound pressure to the air. In the dome loudspeaker, on the other hand, the diaphragm corresponds to a spherical section surface; it is approximately hemispherical and usually curved outward.

Due to the shape of the dome loudspeaker, the diaphragm has a higher stiffness, which results in less non-linear distortion due to bending vibrations. In dome speakers, the voice coil is directly connected to the edge of the dome.

The dispersion pattern from the dome diaphragm has a wider dispersion angle than cone-shaped diaphragms, which is close to a point source of sound. In addition, they have a high efficiency, because the mass of the membrane is relatively small.

Dome tweeters are used in tweeters and midrange drivers. Dome tweeters have diameters between 10 mm and 25 mm, midrange drivers have diameters between 30 mm and 80 mm. In the high- frequency range, dome tweeters can radiate frequencies up to 20 kHz.
