Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) is a neutral graphics file format that can be used to exchange vector graphics between different computers.

A Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) is a portable file format standardized by the International Standards Organization( ISO) for storing and transferring image files.

A CGM file can be structured in different ways, in ASCII format, binary or character. The files encoded in plain text are readable and can be treated like text files. The binary coded files can be edited by many programs and with the character coded files small graphic files are created, which can be transmitted better.
