blu-ray disc XL (BDXL)

The Blu-Ray Disc XL (BDXL) is characterized by an extremely high storage capacity. It consists of three or four storage layers and has storage capacities of 100 GB (3- layer) and 128 GB (4-layer).

The three-layer version is available as a rewritable version, BD-RE, while the four-layer is playable only, BD-R. Recording and playback of BDXL discs can only be done with BD drives that have a BDXL logo. In general, BDXL drives can also play other Blu-Ray discs, but this is not necessarily stated in the standard.

The BDXL is to be used for mass data storage, such as those found in medicine, weather and space research.
