advisory committee on advanced television service (ACATS)

The Advisory Committee on Advanced TelevisionService (ACATS) was established in the 1980s as a US national committee to develop and standardize high-definition television ( HDTV) for the U.S. ACATS chose an analog system that was not compatible with existing television standards. Many organizations were involved in the activities, four of which eventually came together to form a large alliance, Grand Alliance, to advance the HDTV project and later digital TV and DVB-T for the US.
