advanced memory buffer (memory) (AMB)
With the FB-DIMM, the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council( JEDEC) has specified a memory bus architecture in which the Advanced Memory Buffer (AMB) plays a central role. In this architecture, the memory modules are not connected to the memory bus in parallel, but in a kind of point-to-point connection.
The AMB chip forms a buffer, hence the designation Fully Buffered (FB), and transfers the data to the next memory chip or to the memory controller. This makes the transfer independent of the bus access time, and the speed and memory capacity can be increased.
