D1 format

D1 is a digital recording format that is used in video surveillance, among other applications. In the D1 format, the luminance (Y) and the two chrominance components (U, V) are recorded separately.

The method works with a 3/4"-mm magnetic tape and a track width of 40 µm, has a quantization of 8 bits, no data compression and the data rate for the luminance signal is 13.5 MB/s, for the chrominance components 6.75 MB/s each. Color subsampling is done in 4:2:2 ratio according to ITU-R BT.601. D1 tapes have a maximum playing time of 94 minutes. Audio signals are sampled at 48 kHz and recorded on four separate audio channels.

There are different D1 magnetic tapes with tape durations of 11, 34 and 76 minutes. There is also an extremely thin magnetic tape with a recording length of 94 minutes.
