Cisco discovery protocol (CDP)

The CDP protocol(Cisco Discovery Protocol) searches networks for existing neighbors or other end devices.

The CDP protocol, which resides on the link layer of routers, switches, bridges, and hubs, is media- and protocol-independent, as well as independent, and is not based on the IP protocol, IPX, or other protocols. By means of the CDP protocol, a device informs neighboring devices about its presence and, on the other hand, receives information about these devices.

The DCP protocol is used, among other things, to determine the network topology and to authenticate end devices by means of convergence end-point detection( CEP) in Internet telephony. A further development of the CDP protocol is the Link Layer Discovery Protocol( LLDP) developed by IEEE 802.1, but this is not compatible with the CDP protocol.
