structual similarity index (video codec) (SSIM)

Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) is a method for objective quality assessment of video codecs.

The SSIM method analyzes the brightness and chrominance of the frames and takes into account the brightness and color perception of the human eye. Since the human eye can resolve brightness signals much better than color signals, 80% of the luminance signal and 10% of each of the color difference signals are included in the SSIM evaluation.
