smart power supply

Intelligent power supplies, unlike conventional analog power supplies, can respond to load changes and thus optimize efficiency.

Intelligent power supplies work with programmable electronic circuits and integrated microcontrollers. Since a corresponding circuitry effort ofanalog power supplies is much more costly, smart power supplies are much more efficient and much more compact as power management ICs( PMIC).

Smart power supplies respond to load changes by flexibly adjusting their operating point, thereby always achieving the highest efficiency. This is done by changing the switching frequency or other operating parameters. As a result, the efficiency remains unchanged. This is not possible with analog power supplies. Once the operating point has been set, it cannot be changed, which means that the efficiency is lower when the load changes. Furthermore, intelligent power supplies support hot- swap, i.e. they can be replaced during operation and can slowly ramp up the voltage by means of soft-start.
