Wired broadband communication systems can be used for the simultaneous transmission of several or many different types of information. Sorting, i.e. switching between the individual channels, is handled by a multiplexer. In large networks (e.g. ISDN), this can be done not only centrally but also in a distributed manner because of the susceptibility to interference.
