push mail

Push Mail is a special e-mail service developed by the company Research In Motion( RIM) for BlackBerrys, in which mails are pushed from the mail server to the mail client in compressed form.

When an e-mail arrives on the mail server, it is automatically sent to the mail client, almost in real time, provided the client is registered with the Network Operations Center( NOC). With other mail clients, a connection to the server must be established from the client and the email must be picked up. To do this, the user needs a cell phone or smartphone that supports the push service. The push service can be compared to the short message service( SMS). Push mail is supported by many mail providers and works with the well-known mail protocols, Post Office Protocol( POP) and Internet Message Access Protocol( IMAP). When a push mail is received, the user is alerted by an acoustic or haptic signal.

Push services are also available for notebooks and tablets. However, use for these devices is not permitted in Germany for patent reasons. This applies in particular to the iPhone and iPad.
