portable bit map (PBM)

The Portable Bitmap File Format (PBM) is a graphics file format for monochrome raster image representations. It serves as a file exchange format and can represent the data in binary form or in ASCII.

In the PBMPLUS version, this intermediate format supports color and grayscale. PBM and PBMPLUS are supported by various operating systems. The extension of the PBM file is *.pbm.
