pixel cropping

Pixel cropping, or cropping, is the process of cropping images or film when scanning or changing aspect ratios. Cropping involves trimming images on one or more sides of the image.

Pixel cropping has historical reasons related to overscan and poor image quality at the outer edges of an image. This can be the case, for example, when color fringes appear on the transmission path due to faulty processing. These are then eliminated by pixel cropping or zooming. With digital images, however, digital zooming leads to unsightly artifacts due to the interpolations of the zoom algorithms.

Cropping images

Cropping is applied to crop enlargements to emphasize interesting image details; also in digital film projection. Cropping is used to change the classic image format with an aspect ratio of slightly above 17:9 to an image format of 21:9. Compared to other methods such as letterboxing, pixel cropping has the advantage that the image is not distorted but only cropped at the edges.
