The term phoneypot is derived from the terms phishing and honeypot. The purpose of phoneypots is to lure pisher to a prepared phishing page in order to identify them.

The phoneypot concept was developed at the Ruhr University in Bochum. In the Phoneypot concept, phishers are lured to interesting phishing pages that have many invented and marked records and are recognizable to the system. Once the phisher logs into such a system with a made-up record, he is lured to a separate page that imitates the original system. In fact, it is a system that collects the phisher's network and browser data: the Phoneypot.
