Offsite storage is a concept for backing up and restoring data. In this concept, the computer system storage is not located in the same building as the computer system.

With offsite storage, the physical data storage takes place in another building or data center and is supported by high availability and low fault tolerance. Companies use offsite storage for disaster recovery because the offsite data is protected and cannot be physically damaged or stolen.

Offsite storage can include all storage media, but predominantly tape drives, tape libraries and optical storage media are used for backup and disaster recovery. Offsite storage also refers to rented storage where users store their data over the Internet. Offsite storage is also referred to as offsite backup or offsite data protection.
