microring resonator
Semiconductor lasers such as the Fabry-Perot laser(FPL) or the Distributed Feedback Laser( DFB) operate with downstream filters or optical amplifiers. Such optical components are realized in planar technology. To overcome these manufacturing limitations, the Heinrich Hertz Institute, Berlin, has developed a resonator in the form of a microring with a diameter of 10 µm: the microring resonator. Such a microring resonator can be used as an optical filter and filter out individual wavelengths.
