luminance meter

Luminance meters detect the reflected light at the measurement location. Luminance is the impression of brightness that the human eye experiences from the reflected light.

To evaluate luminance, luminance meters are used that preselect the light by color and determine the angle of incidence at which the luminance measurement is made. The purpose of color preselection via color filters is to ensure that only light that corresponds to human eye sensitivity is detected.

In principle, luminance meters are comparable to lux meters, with the difference of color filtering and correction as well as the limitation of oblique incident light. For this purpose, they have a tubular light inlet. Luminance meters measure the luminous intensity in relation to a unit area in candela per square meter( cd/m2). The measured value ranges are subdivided and can range from 0.01 cd/m2 to 20,000 cd/m2. For higher luminances, gray filters must be connected upstream.

Luminance meters are used for light measurement on light-emitting surfaces such as displays, on light consoles used in the printing industry, or on illuminated signs.
