integrated service digital broadcasting (ISDB)

As the name suggests, Integrated Service DigitalBroadcasting (ISDB) is digital broadcasting with integrated services. Service integration is the primary goal of the ISDB system used in Japan and Brazil, which can transmit both radio and television.

ISDB is available as ISDB-C, which transmits television in cable distribution networks, ISDB-S for satellite transmission, and ISDB-T for terrestrial television. ISDB can transmit standard definition television( SDTV) and also high definition television( HDTV) with multichannel sound.

ISDB-T (Terrestrial) operates in the frequency range between 470 MHz and 770 MHz and is suitable for terrestrial transmissions, equally for stationary television but also for mobile television. ISDB-C and ISDB-S use a carrier signal modulated in quadrature phase shift ke ying( QPSK) or in phase shift keying (PSK8) for transmission. ISDB-T uses COFDM- DQPSK in various variants or 16QAM and 64QAM quadrature modulation.

The European counterpart to ISDB-T used in Japan is T-DMB, the American Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service( MBMS), Broadcast Multicast Service( BCMCS) and the proprietary MediaFLO. ISDB-T was developed by the Japanese Association of Radio Industries and Business( ARIB).
