In every network, computer or node, data is generated and stored during processing that is no longer needed after a task has been completed, i.e. has become data garbage. In order to free up valuable memory for the next task, the operating system of a computer cleans up the memory locations occupied by data garbage during the idle state phases. This cleanup action is called garbage collection.
