Freemail is a free mail service that is financed by online advertising or fee-based additional features. It is offered by many mail providers, which differ in the services provided.

Freemail is offered by some providers as a standalone service, while others - such as Google, AOL or Yahoo - integrate the freemail function into the browser. This has the advantage that the user can dial in anywhere and send or receive e-mails. He is neither program nor location bound. Furthermore, some freemail providers support their offerings with apps for smartphones.

Freemail service offerings differ in terms of the storage space provided and the size of attachments, which can be 30 MB or more. Access to the email account is mostly via the Post Office Protocol (POP3) and via the Internet Message Access Protocol( IMAP).
