The Empty Slot procedure is a procedure in ring networks such as Token Ring that ensures collision-free access to the transmission medium. The empty slot procedure is based on the fact that stations can only access an empty time slot. A station wishing to transmit may only do so when it reaches an empty slot circulating on the ring. It can then enter its datainto this slot.
