A core router is a high-speed router in a core network
. Core routers are extremely powerful switching computers and operate with data throughputs of several terabits per second or hundreds of gigabits per second. They are therefore also referred to as terabit ro uters or gigabit routers. They are used in the backbone of the Internet or in backbones of national and international core networks. Functionally, core routers can also be implemented in core switches.
