commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)
Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) products is software or hardware that can be mass produced and used as is. All products that have no custom additions or customizations and are purchased "off the shelf" are COTS products.
COTS products are low-cost, mass-produced products that are easy to install and work with existing system components or interconnect codes. Most programs that ordinary users use fall into the COTS category: operating systems, office programs, word processing, presentation, and e-mail programs are just a few examples of typical COTS programs.
In addition to software, many electronic components such as A/D converters, amplifiers, comparators, memory devices, shift registers, etc. are also commercial off-the-shelf products, the German translation for Commercial off-the-Shelf.
