A claimant is an entity in the communication over an authentication protocol. The counter instance is the verifier. The identity and statements of the claimant are confirmed via the authentication protocol. A claimant acts in favor of the user and performs the necessary functions to allow the user to submit their authentication credentials. A typical claimant is a smart card.
