A blank disc is an unrecorded compact disc( CD) or DVD that can be written to in a CD burner or DVD writer, respectively, and played directly as a fixed storage medium in CD drives or DVD drives, respectively.

The blank disc has a prescribed track, the pregroove, into which the data is burned in the burner. Its use is specified by the ATIP code, Absolute Time in Pregroove (ATIP).

Blank discs are available for the various recordable disc versions such as CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW. Among the DVD blanks, there are also those that can write both DVD layers of a side using the phase change process.
