bearer independent call control (MPLS) (BICC)

Bearer Independent Call Control (BICC) is a universal ITU standard that integrates existing ISDN, analog and mobile communications services in a single network.

The integration of services is particularly important for telecommunications companies, as they generally operate several different parallel networks, which has a cost-driving effect. In addition to the connection-oriented networks for conventional telephony( POTS), an IP backbone is required for data transfers, and mobile networks also require their own network infrastructure with an extensive signaling structure.

The BICC protocol is intended to integrate all these networks and services. BICC enables existing analog and ISDN services to be provided over a variety of data protocols such as the IP protocol or ATM, thus providing a universal standard. The newly approved extension BICC Capability Set 2 deals with signaling for 3rd generation mobile networks. This means that these networks can also be integrated into a uniform network infrastructure in the future.
