application identifier (AID)

The Application Identifier (AID) identifies an application on a smart card. The Application Identifier is a 5 to 16 byte long identifier that can be part of a Dedicated File (DF) and that makes the Dedicated File unique worldwide. Application identifiers are standardized by the International Standards Organization (ISO) under ISO 7816 (-5) and distinguish national and international identifiers. It knows two data fields: the Registered Identifier (RID) and the Proprietary Identifier (PID).
