Determination of the absorption index

The absorption index is an index for the attenuation of an electromagnetic or optical wave caused by absorption. It refers to one unit length of an optical fiber and depends on the material and its refractive index. The absorption index is calculated from the ratio of the product of the absorption coefficient and the wavelength, to the product of 4 pi times the refractive index.
