dotted decimal notation
Dotted Decimal Notation is a term from the TCP/ IP world. It is the syntactic representation for a 32-bit integer consisting of four 8-bit numbers, i.e. four bytes, and written in the decimal system divided by dots: n.n.n.
In this notation, each decimal number, each consisting of eight bits, can take the values between 0 and 255.
Many TCP/IP application programs accept the dotted decimal notation as the IP address of the destination computer. Nameservers convert these hard-to-remember number combinations of the IP address into domain names. Example: The dotted decimal notation 213.133.101.238. hides the domain address of www.itwissen.info.
