volume pixel (Voxel)

While a pixel is two-dimensional, a voxel adds the third dimension, spatial depth. The abbreviation voxel is derived from the term volume pixel. A voxel is thus described by three coordinates: Length, Width, Depth.

For true 3D representations, the voxels must undergo a transformation in which they receive different opacities. Opacities indicate the opacity of materials. This is the prerequisite for examining 3D bodies in terms of their internal structure. Corresponding images are known in medicine from computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Classical 3D representations are easier to process due to the voxels and can be viewed from all sides. By means of voxelization, the user can add depth to two-dimensional graphics and images.
