unicode transformation format (UTF)

The UnicodeTransformation Formats (UTF) are defined formats for the conversion of Unicode for electronic processing. The Unicode Transformation Formats can be used to convert 16-bit character codes into 8 bits.

Characters in UTF format are represented by a different number of bytes and belong to Double Byte Character Sets( DBCS), whose characters consist of two bytes, and Multibyte Character Sets( MBCS), whose characters consist of two or more bytes. Known UTF formats are UTF-7, UTF-8, UTF-16 and UTF-32.
