multibyte character set (MBCS)

Multibyte Character Sets (MBCS) are character sets whose characters consist of two or more bytes.

In contrast to the MBSC character sets, there are the character sets whose characters consist of one byte, the Single Byte Character Sets( SBCS) and the Double Byte Character Sets( DBCS), whose characters are represented with two bytes.

MBCS character sets, depending on how many bytes they work with, offer an incredible variety of encodable characters, which are mainly used for Asian characters. With a 2-byte data set, 65,536 (256 x 256) characters can be represented; with three bytes, this figure already exceeds 16 million characters. The multibyte character sets include different variants of the UnicodeTransformation Format( UTF).
