A superchannel is an optical transmission path with an extremely high data rate. Such superchannels will soon be used in optical core networks and will replace conventional Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing
(DWDM). Alcatel-Lucent has developed a superchannel with a data rate of 1.2 Tbit/s. This superchannel operates with 120-Gbit/s channels that use bandwidth-efficient Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). This superchannel operates with 120 Gbit/s channels transmitted over an optical fiber using the bandwidth-efficient Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM).
