redundant array of inexpensive libraries (RAIL)
Redundant Array of Inexpensive Libraries (RAIL) is a data protection software for Redundant Array of Independent Tapes( RAIT).
RAIL was developed for hard disk arrays, but is used in tape drive arrays. Using RAIT provides a " virtual tape drive" that is actually made up of multiple physical tape drives. This increases write speed, which is important for large data backup operations; at the same time, it reduces the risk of data loss.
RAIL applies the same concept to tape library systems: Each tape library consists of multiple tape drives.
